Community Service Recognition: Edward (Jim) Nicewander
In January, SAVMA celebrated volunteerism at the 2020 SAVMA Awards, a volunteer recognition event for all of Southern Arizona. Organizations were invited to nominate individuals for a Community Service Recognition in honor of their exceptional giving and spirit of service. Throughout the month of April, we will be highlighting these individuals and their nomination as part of VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION MONTH!
Edward (Jim) Nicewander: Transportation and Transportation Scheduler for Interfaith Community Services
Edward (Jim) Nicewander is a dedicated transportation volunteer for many isolated seniors that rely on Interfaith Community Services for essential rides to medical and other life-needs appointments. Jim’s dedication and compassion is evident in his commitment to help meet the transportation needs of ICS recipients. Jim not only drives hundreds of miles a year on a regular basis, but also responds to last minute driving needs that come up. He provides one on one driving in a pinch and also drives the ICS van for group trips as needed. The transportation office also relies on Jim’s customer service skills as part of the team that provides confirmation phone calls to recipients and other transportation volunteers to verify upcoming ride-match appointments. Drivers like Jim who serve as ANYWHERE drivers help meet isolated senior’s transportation needs by driving to any Tucson area zip code and serve as the backbone of the successful ICS transportation services program. Jim is a valued part of the transportation team providing compassionate, caring independent living services to lower income seniors and help to make our community stronger by helping those in need.
Jim says, “I enjoy helping people who have no means of transportation get the critical help they need. It gives me a deep sense of satisfaction and I meet interesting and diverse people.”
