Bring your Executive Directors!

We will be learning about an organization wide process to maximize the power of volunteers to better meet our missions. The Service Enterprise Initiative is a national change management program, led by Points of Light, that helps organizations better meet their missions through the power of volunteers. Through a comprehensive assessment, training, coaching and certification model, nonprofits are equipped to engage and manage volunteers more effectively to meet community needs. Research shows that nonprofits that operate as Service Enterprises are equally as effective as their peers but at almost half the median budget, and are significantly more adaptable, sustainable and capable of going to scale.

The Service Enterprise program is based on rigorous research, and the process includes an application, diagnostic, training, coaching and certification, and is illustrated by the process wheel below. The time it takes an organization to complete this process can vary between six months to a year or more.

Most important is that, as an executive director, Ken witnessed the transformation of his
volunteer program into a Service Enterprise by a great volunteer coordinator. Otherwise, he has

education program coordinator, teacher trainer, evaluation specialist, ED and regional director,
